 Add onions, garlic and sugar to the pot and stir to combine
 Cook until onions are caramelized, about 30 minutes
 Add broth and wine to the pot, bring to a boil
 Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes
 While soup is simmering, toast slices of bread
 Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted bread and a generous amount of cheese
 Place bowls under the broiler until cheese is melted and bubbly
