Soak the black beans in a large bowl of water overnight.
In a large pot, cook the pork shoulder and bacon until browned.
Add the onions and garlic to the pot and cook until softened.
Drain the beans and add them to the pot along with the salt, pepper, and bay leaves.
Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 2 hours, until the beans are tender and the flavors are well combined.
While the stew is simmering, cook the rice in a separate pot according to package instructions.
Serve the feijoada hot over the cooked rice.
