Mix the rye flour, warm water, salt and yeast together in a large bowl. Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet. Cover the loaf with a damp cloth and let it rise for about 30 minutes.
Once the dough has risen, brush the top with a little water and sprinkle with some rye flour. Bake the pumpernickel in a preheated oven at 350°F for 45 minutes. Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
