Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch (23 cm) baking pan with butter or cooking spray.
In a medium bowl, mix together 1 cup (240 ml) of cornmeal, 1 cup (240 ml) of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup (60 ml) of sugar, 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) of salt.
Stir in 1 cup (240 ml) of milk, 1/4 cup (60 ml) of melted butter, and 1 egg until just combined. Do not overmix.
Pour batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
